On January 12, 2027, nothing breaks. That’s the problem.
Security updates stop that day. The server keeps running, so it gets left alone. We replace it before that day.

We find every one of them.
Including whatever else moved onto the box.

Security updates, by version

- Server 2022 October 14, 2031

Server 2016 updates stop on January 12, 2027. Not sure which one you have? On the server, press the Windows key and R, type winver, and press Enter. On a server with no desktop (Server Core), type systeminfo at the command prompt instead. Dates checked on Microsoft Learn, 16 October 2026.
It is rarely just the operating system
Updates stop January 12, 2027.
Security fixes are all it has had since January 2022. Those stop on January 12, 2027. Without the extension below, every hole found after that stays open.
The extension.
Up to three more years of Critical and Important fixes, if the license qualifies (Extended Security Updates, Standard and Datacenter, through Azure Arc). We check yours. It buys time for a planned move, not a way out of one.
The server that signs everyone in.
If it is your domain controller, it cannot just be switched off. Its jobs move first, carefully.
The application that runs the business.
Practice management, accounting, the industry package. The vendor decides what it supports, not you.
Whatever else moved in.
File shares, a database, the scanner drop folder, a license server nobody documented.
The trap in the obvious answer.
Server 2019 looks like the smaller step. Its updates stop January 9, 2029. A full migration, downtime included, for two years of runway.
Pick the landing spot once. Server 2022 is supported to October 2031, Server 2025 to November 2034.
Sometimes 2019 is still right, when your business software is only supported there. Then plan for January 2029 with your eyes open.

Find every one of them.
Including the box somebody set up for one thing and forgot. We find out who would notice if it stopped.
Ask the vendors first, in writing.
Before any hardware is quoted. Their answer sets the plan, and sometimes it is unwelcome.
Move it with a way back.
Backed up and tested first, cut over out of hours, with a rollback ready. What moved where is written down.
