Book 15 minutes with me. You leave with my cell.

Something breaks at 2 AM. Do you know what happens next?

Twelve plain questions, about two minutes. It shows what you know about your setup, not how good your IT company is. Your answers stay in your browser.

No IT provider, or you handle it yourself? Answer for whoever looks after your IT, even if that is you. Not sure is a fine answer; it just means nobody has shown you yet.

If something broke tomorrow

A backup only counts once someone has seen it restore.

1. In the last 12 months, has someone restored files or a server from your backups as a test and shown you it worked?
2. Is at least one copy of your backups somewhere a hacked everyday account could not delete or change?

If something happens at 2 AM

Software can raise an alarm in the middle of the night. The question is who answers it.

3. If a security alert goes off at 2 AM, does a real person look into it that night?
4. Can someone cut an infected computer off the network that night, without waiting for the office to open?

Who holds the keys

If your IT provider vanished tomorrow, could you still get in?

5. Does your company, not your IT provider, hold the top admin login for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace?
6. Is your domain name (the one your email and website use) registered in an account in your company’s name, with a login you can reach?
7. When someone leaves, is there a checklist that shuts off their access the same day, including email, phone and remote access?

What an insurer would ask

These are the kinds of things cyber insurance applications ask about.

8. Is multi-factor sign-in (a code or approval on a phone) turned on for email and for every remote login?
9. Does every computer run monitored protection, meaning software that a person is watching, not just antivirus?
10. Do your staff get regular phishing training or test phishing emails?
11. Do people do their everyday work without admin rights on their computers?
12. Do security updates get installed within about 30 days, including apps like Chrome, Adobe and Zoom, not only Windows?

Your answers stay in this page. If you choose Ask Billy, you see exactly what goes in the message.
